Stalling: What do they have to lose

There is no negative about an insurer delay: Delay in processing claims, delay in reimbursing claims, delay in appeals. Like any other business, holding onto your money for more time has no downside: No late fees, no impact on their credit, no refusal of service to them based on their delays. This is important to realize because when you deal with your insurer or when you shop for insurance you will likely be told "most claims are resolved within 30 days."

And if not? When you recontact your insurer, simultaneously send a copy of your correspondence to your insurance commissioner and the better business bureau.

Task a day insurance: Take a page from collection agencies: Annoy, threaten and pursue your insurer. Go as public as you comfortably can and remember to include boilerplate language that the information you are supplying is only intended for use by the recipient in connection with the issue that you contacted that person for in the first place.
