If You’re Bored By Politics Listen for Keywords like “Strengthening”

When it comes to translating what we’re hearing from our candidates, listen for the word “strengthening” as a time to tune in and focus on designated target areas for various candidates.

Though much conversation has been had and more is needed about how the Affordable Care Act is “strengthening” our government health insurance programs of Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP, the candidates are also planning to “strengthen” social security.

Again, the absence of discussion about social security is primarily based on the fact that both parties have chosen to sacrifice their ideas of “strengthening” for votes, each seeking the “elderly” vote prompting reassurance and promises to those 55 and over that their presidency won’t impact “entitlements.”

For the vast majority of non-senior Americans, those under the age of 55, however, Social Security is on the chopping block for BOTH parties. Go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/seniors-and-social-security and in a fairly non-detailed statement of policy you’ll find that the President seeks “…a bipartisan solution to strengthen Social Security for future generations.”

Similarly, go to http://www.mittromney.com/issues/social-security and you’ll find that Mitt Romney also intends to “…strengthen America’s entitlement programs…” Mitt Romney clarifies his intentions better than the White House statement when he indicates his goal is to increase retirement age and that while Social Security grows it should grow at a slower rate for those with higher incomes.

The candidates are likely more in agreement than their bitterly arguing supporters will admit. As reported in the “Las Vegas Sun,” in an 8/19/12 article by Stephen Ohlemacher, it is stated that, “Last year, however, Obama put on the table a proposal to reduce annual COLAs…” though Mr. Ohlemacher adds, “…nothing came of the proposal.”

By using the keyword, “strengthen,” you’ll know to tune in and follow a specific issue that is relevant to you. There is no creative thinking going on, both candidates and both parties are seeking to slash the costs of Social Security. When you hear the word “strengthen” you’ll get a better idea of what to expect.
