What are you insuring?

Task a day insurance: When you shop for insurance start with question #1: What do you want to insure? What contingency, what thing that may happen are you looking for coverage for? In health insurance it should be a no brainer, we seek insurance coverage to help pay for medical care when we get sick.

Now you're shopping for insurance (to help you pay for medical care if you get sick). Should the first thing you are told be about how you are covered for annual checkups? No.
The first bits of information you need are: Show me the text in this policy that explains what I need to do to get coverage if I get sick (do not be specific about illness but be specific about how you are being treated eg emergency room, if you're on the road, scheduled hospitalization, or general office visit in your area, and make sure you ask about miles from your home considered to be part of your region).

Expect to be shown text that talks about how emergency room visits are covered (usually ambulance transportation is not part of a policy, but you can ask). How 'bout regular doctor visits? How 'bout scheduled hospitalization (to deliver babies, have surgery--how does that process work?).

That's the first step. I buy insurance and I get sick: How does my insurance cover me when I seek medical treatment? Get answers to this question and highlight it in your policy.
