One of the places that insurance companies make up for having to cover certain things under Obamacare is to cannibalize dental plans with provisions for less coverage and less choice. In some instances, employers announced the reduction in dental insurance coverage as a means of reducing the sticker shock of increased premiums for health insurance plans.
Obamacare neglects dental insurance coverage for the most part except in the case of children. Forecasts for the costs of dental care and per capita spending on dental care are also in the up direction.
If you have dental insurance, you should utilize that insurance for cleaning and checkups. While you’re likely to experience the same sticker shock you see when visiting other healthcare providers, it is unlikely your situation financially will improve under Obamacare such that you’ll have more money available to spend for your dental care since our national trend has excused and in many cases incentivizes less insurance coverage for both medical and dental care while leaving a sky’s-the-limit possibility for how much providers who are outside of entitlement programs such as Veterans Benefits, Medicare-Medicaid can charge.
